Shailen Toolsi

Process Engineering & Sustainability Director at Tiger Brands

Shailen Toolsi has extensive work experience in various engineering roles within the manufacturing industry. Shailen started their career at the CSIR as a Chemical Engineer, where they focused on downstream processing and carried out pilot trials and generation of market samples for fine chemicals. Shailen then moved to Unilever, where they worked as a Development Process Engineer, responsible for determining process parameters and commissioning a new powder factory. Shailen also worked at L'Oreal SA as a Master Scheduler, developing production forecasts and analyzing constraints.

Afterwards, they joined Hudson & Knight as a Process Engineering & TPM Manager, leading a team of process engineers and implementing solutions to optimize refinery performance. At The South African Breweries, Shailen took on various roles including Brewing Sectional Engineer, Filtration Area Manager, and Lead Process Engineer. In these positions, they oversaw maintenance, reviewed maintenance packages, and resolved process issues.

Shailen then became the Plant Manager at Johnson Matthey, where they were responsible for the production facility and ensured safety, quality, and timely delivery of products. Their most recent role is at Tiger Brands, where they initially served as the Lead Process Engineer - Operations Centre of Excellence, leading process optimization and reduction of utilities and material usage. Shailen was later promoted to the role of Process Engineering Director - Operations Centre of Excellence, where they direct a team responsible for process optimization, design, and implementation, with a focus on sustainability.

Throughout their career, Shailen has consistently demonstrated their expertise in process engineering, optimization, and continuous improvement.

Shailen Toolsi earned a Matric degree from Grove End secondary in 1992. Shailen then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Durban Westville between 1993 and 1998. In 1998, they pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (Water & Environmental Management) at the same university. In 2009, they completed a MAP Diploma in Management Advancement Programme at Wits Business School. Shailen also obtained a Diploma in Brewing from the Institute of Brewing & Distilling in 2010. Additionally, in 2010, they underwent Executive Education at UCT Graduate School of Business through their Management Development Programme.
