Michael Becker

Director Of Global Communications, Climate Change at The Nature Conservancy

Michael Becker has a diverse work experience, primarily focusing on communication and filmmaking related to environmental conservation and climate change. Michael has held positions such as Director of Global Communications, Climate Change at The Nature Conservancy, Producer/Director at Terra Matters, and Communications Lead, 1t.org at the World Economic Forum. Michael has also worked as a Science Communication Manager at Frontiers and as a Director & Assistant Producer at Plimsoll Productions, where they directed on the underwater and Arctic episodes of Netflix's Night on Earth wildlife. Additionally, Michael has worked with the BBC as a Director & Researcher, where they directed complex underwater Antarctic shoots and secured grants for logistical support. Michael has also contributed to research projects as a Visiting Researcher at the Center for Macroecology, Evolution, and Climate at the University of Copenhagen. Michael holds a PhD from McGill University in the Department of Geography, where they studied the ecological and geophysical consequences of polar deserts turning into wetlands due to climate change in the Canadian High Arctic. Michael has also worked as an Assistant Cameraman for the BBC, providing scientific advisory and filming support for a documentary on Arctic wolves. Furthermore, Michael has contributed as a Scientific Diver and emergency medic on the Tawani International Antarctic Research Expedition, where they wrote a series for The New York Times.

Michael Becker obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Psychology from McGill University in 2008. Michael then pursued a Ph.D. in Climate Change, Polar Ecology, and Geomorphology at the same university from 2011 to 2015. In addition, they have obtained certifications in Occupational SCUBA from the Diver Certification Board of Canada and in the Oxford Leading Sustainable Corporations Programme from the University of Oxford, in the years 2023 and 2022 respectively.
