Brian Connon

Brian Connon has a diverse background in the field of hydrography and marine science. Brian is currently serving as the President of The Hydrographic Society of America, a role they assumed in January 2024 after being President-elect since December 2022. Prior to this, they held the position of Vice President of Ocean Mapping at Saildrone Inc since December 2020.

Brian has also been involved with various professional organizations and institutions. Brian is a Fellow and Chartered Marine Scientist (Hydrography) at The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) since August 2019. From January 2020 to January 2021, they worked as the Editor for the International Hydrographic Review at the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).

Before joining the private sector, Brian held several leadership positions in the US Navy. Brian served as a Naval Officer from May 1990 to October 2018, with notable roles such as Deputy Oceanographer of the Navy and Deputy Navigator of the Navy. Additionally, they worked at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency as the Director of the Maritime Safety Office from August 2015 to August 2018.

Brian also has experience in scientific research and academia. Brian served as the Director of the Hydrographic Science Research Center at The University of Southern Mississippi from September 2018 to December 2020. Brian was also Superintendent and Commanding Officer at the United States Naval Observatory from August 2013 to July 2015.

Throughout their career, Brian has been actively involved with the International Hydrographic Organization, holding the position of CBSC Vice Chair from 2007 to 2011.

Overall, Brian Connon has a wealth of experience and expertise in hydrography, marine science, and leadership roles within various organizations.

Brian Connon obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from the University of South Carolina in 1990. Brian then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School between 1996 and 1999. In 1999, they pursued another Master of Science degree, this time in Hydrographic Science, from The University of Southern Mississippi, which they completed in 2000. Brian Connon also holds additional certifications, including Chartered Marine Scientist (Hydrography) from the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST), obtained in 2019, and Naval Hydrographer (MH1) from the US Navy.
