J. Brian Charles is a seasoned journalist with extensive experience in reporting on various social issues, including race, education, and criminal justice. Currently serving as a Senior Reporter for The Chronicle of Higher Education since March 2023, Charles previously held significant roles such as Founding Deputy News Editor at Baltimore Beat and Inequality and Criminal Justice Reporter for The Trace. Notable accomplishments include investigative reporting on poverty in Connecticut for the New Haven Register and comprehensive coverage of crime and politics at the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. With degrees from Antioch University-Los Angeles and Purchase College, J. Brian Charles is also recognized for mentoring aspiring journalists during a tenure as Professional-in-resident at Louisiana State University.
