Zakya Warkeno (she/her/they) obtained her Master of Social Work Degree with a field specialization in carceral systems from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. While there, she interned with The Bronx Defenders and organized an advocacy campaign for the continued use of COVID-19 re-entry hotels as a support for community members who found themselves unhoused upon their release from jail. In her previous work, she taught horticulture and gardening to incarcerated folks on Rikers Island. In this program, she guided students in designing and building a garden from bare land to a flourishing oasis filled with student-chosen and grown vegetables and flowers.
