Richard Simpson has a diverse work experience spanning over several companies and roles. Richard started their career in 1988 at Maestro Solutions Ltd, where they worked as a Software Engineer, maintaining database applications and providing technical support. Richard then moved to Exemus Ltd in 1997, where they served as a Software Engineer and Project Manager, leading a team in creating bespoke software solutions for clients.
In 2002, Simpson joined aquila as a Software Engineer, working on pension solutions for international companies. Their responsibilities included gathering requirements and writing specifications. Richard stayed with aquila until 2010.
Next, Simpson worked at Playfish from 2010 to 2012. Initially serving as a Server Developer, they were responsible for implementing new game features and improving the codebase for the Facebook game Pet Society. Later, they became the Lead Server Developer and Technical Lead for the game.
After Playfish, Simpson joined Hooplo Media in 2012 as a Senior Java Lead. Richard provided guidance and mentoring to the Java team and helped build a platform used by the company and third parties.
In 2012, Simpson also started working at King, initially as a Server Side Developer for Pepper Panic Saga. Richard then became a Principal Engineer, where they worked on King's first multiplayer game, Shuffle Cats. Richard contributed to the game's backend and the development of the multiplayer framework. Simpson continued to provide assistance to various games in the studio.

Richard Simpson completed a BSc Hons (2:1) degree in Computer Science and Information Systems from The University of Salford from 1995 to 1997. Prior to that, they attended Watford College from 1993 to 1995, where they earned a HND (Distinction) degree in Software Engineering. In terms of additional certifications, Richard Simpson obtained the Certified Scrum Master certification from the Scrum Alliance in August 2013.
