Robert Barchi is currently a Distinguished University Professor at Rutgers University and previously served as its president from September 2012 to June 2020. Prior to that, Dr. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University from 2004 to 2012. He is a trustee of the RWJ/Barnabas Health system and of the RWJ University Hospitals. He previously served on the boards of Covance, Inc. (NYSE: CVD) and VWR International (Nasdaq: VWR).
Barchi holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry and an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and is a board-certified neurologist. He is a fellow of the American Neurological Association, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Barchi was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences for his research on voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle.
