During this time, they operated a research lab, conducted research, and taught undergraduate physics courses. Maarten also worked as a Post Doctoral Researcher at the university from June 1996 to June 1997.

Prior to their time at The Ohio State University, Maarten worked as a Post Doctoral Researcher at the University of Pittsburgh from October 1994 to May 1996, conducting research in thin film flow and two-dimensional turbulence.

Maarten'sacademic journey started at Exxon Corporate Research, where they worked as a PhD student from 1989 to 1994.
