Leslie Heaphy began their professional career in 1993 as a lecturer at the University of Toledo. In 1995, they moved to Kent State University, where they were an associate professor. In 2010, they joined the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) as a Vice President and Board member.

Leslie Heaphy completed their Bachelor of Arts in Theirtory from Siena College between 1983 and 1987. Leslie then went on to The University of Toledo, graduating with a MA and PHD in Theirtory between 1987 and 1995.
