Derek Weber

Director - Cell Product Development at Sionic Energy

Derek Weber has over 18 years of experience in various roles within the energy and engineering industries. Derek is currently the Director of Cell Product Development at Sionic Energy since January 2022. Prior to that, they worked as the Director of Core Technology Product Development at Largo Clean Energy starting in December 2020. Before that, they held multiple positions at VIONX Energy Corporation, including Director of Core Technology from January 2018 to December 2020 and Director of Battery Stack Engineering from July 2015 to January 2018. At VIONX Energy Corporation, they were responsible for leading research, design, development, validation, and production manufacturing of electrochemical vanadium redox flow battery technology. Derek also managed the detailed product design, validation, and advanced manufacturing process development for a grid energy storage flow battery.

Prior to their time at VIONX Energy Corporation, Derek worked at Premium Power Corporation as the Director of Battery Stack Engineering from March 2014 to July 2015 and as a Senior Mechanical Engineer from January 2013 to March 2014. Derek began their career at General Motors in 2003 as a Senior Product Design and Development Engineer, where they led the product design of a plastic manifold with functional integration and oversaw prototype design, manufacturing optimization, and failure modes analysis. Derek has expertise in areas such as injection molding, sealing, fastening, vibration welding, and design for assembly/manufacturing.

Derek Weber has a strong educational background in the field of engineering. Derek completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2001. After gaining practical experience in the field, they furthered their education by pursuing a Master of Science degree in Strategic Leadership at Roberts Wesleyan University from 2008 to 2009. Additionally, in 2001-2002, Derek Weber attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute again, this time completing a Master of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering.
