Randy Hessong

Environmental Scientist at Shannon & Wilson, Inc.

Randy joined Shannon & Wilson in 1993 after three years of applied graduate research in the field of immiscible groundwater contaminant transport. He provides environmental engineering services and materials testing in Shannon & Wilson’s Anchorage lab, using procedures for measuring soil, aggregate, and asphalt properties such as particle-size analysis and distribution, plasticity index, specific gravity, moisture-density relationships, hydraulic conductivity, oil content, and Marshall analyses. Randy also provides field testing services for the determination of moisture content and density of soils, measuring temperature, slump, unit weight, and air content of fresh concrete. He is experienced with curing and storing concrete cylinders and measuring concrete strength by compression testing. Randy supervised the Anchorage lab from 2006 to 2017 and was the laboratory supervisor during 2002-2003 construction seasons. He has been responsible for maintaining AASHTO R18 laboratory accreditation and US Army corps of Engineers validation and was an American Concrete Institute (ACI)-certified field-testing technician. He continues to have a hand in laboratory operations, providing aggregate, concrete and asphalt testing per various ASTM International (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT), and Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) methods. Randy is WAQTC-qualified for aggregate, embankment, and asphalt testing.

Randy’s other environmental and geotechnical engineering services have included conducting numerous subsurface soil and groundwater contamination investigations involving fieldwork, data quality assessment, and technical writing. He has been responsible for sampling soil, groundwater, surface water, building materials, and waste materials; waste characterization and disposal; underground storage tank (UST) and above ground storage tank (AST) closure assessments; field engineering remedial systems; design and construction of groundwater remediation systems; and Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) throughout Alaska.
