Ian Cave has been working in the software engineering industry since 2010. In 2010, they began working as a Computer Science Preceptor at Macalester College. Two years later, in 2012, they became a Research Assistant at the same college. In 2014, they worked as a Software Developer at both Concord and AppFirst, where they were a backend developer helping develop and maintain data aggregation pipeline, worked on maintaining and upgrading a unit testing framework for data pipeline and APIs, and built a framework for management commands to be used by their management layer to execute commands remotely and filter out irrelevant responses. In 2016, they moved to ScienceLogic as a Software Engineer II. Currently, they are a Software Engineer at SentiLink.

Ian Cave attended Macalester College from 2009 to 2013 and earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in both Computer Science and Astronomy and Astrophysics.
