Peter Gunder brings 35 years of experience to RoofMarketplace working as an investment and business development professional with US and global property casualty insurance companies. Mr. Gunder serves currently, or has served, as a voting board member or board observer with established and startup companies based in Madison, Wisconsin; Chicago; Hong Kong and San Francisco.

He retired in July 2020 from the senior executive team at American Family Insurance, the nation’s 7th largest homeowner insurer. where he served in multiple roles including Executive Vice President, Chief Business Development Officer and Chief Investment Officer. Peter led the American Family team’s successful acquisition of Homesite Insurance in 2013.

In 2010, Peter cofounded American Family Ventures (AFV), a leading corporate venture general partner with multiple unaffiliated insurance company limited partners. Currently, Peter is a Venture Partner with AFV. Peter is the founding President of the American Family Institute for Corporate and Social Impact, a social impact venture capital fund.

Peter cofounded the advanced data science and analytics lab (DSAL) at American Family, leading to the spinout of Arturo. Arturo uses machine learning to create property insights and predictive analytics from aerial imagery.

In 2001 Peter cofounded Cardinal Investment Advisors, LLC (Cardinal), a leading investment strategy consultant to insurers. For 6 years in a row, Cardinal has been named one of Pensions & Investments Best Places to Work. Cardinal serves over 50 US insurers with invested assets over $250 billion.

Early in his career, as Treasurer of MMI Companies, Inc. (MMI), Peter financed MMI’s insurance company growth with various private debt and equity rounds. Later, his team took MMI public on the New York Stock Exchange.
