E.K. Cottrell

E.K. Cottrell practices in the area of complex commercial litigation. Some of his representative areas of practice include defense of class actions on behalf of insurers, business entities, and management for alleged improper market conduct or business practices, and fiduciary obligations; representation of insurers and reinsurers in coverage and regulatory compliance matters; and other general business litigation.

E.K. has litigated class actions and other complex commercial litigation matters in the federal and state courts in numerous jurisdictions, including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia. He has served as lead class action counsel for several Fortune 100 companies and as the primary class action counsel nationally on property and casualty issues for one of the nation’s largest insurance companies.

In addition to defending his corporate clients, he has represented companies in bringing claims for business losses arising from breach of contract, insurance fraud and RICO violations, and deceptive and unfair business practices, resulting in recoveries that have ranged from several hundred thousand dollars to over a hundred million dollars.

EK was recognized by Florida Super Lawyers from 2014 to 2016. He is an AV Rated attorney from Martindale-Hubbell. Best Lawyers in America® recognized EK for Commercial Litigation, Jacksonville (2021-2023); Litigation – Insurance, Jacksonville (2022-2023).

An active member at Community Presbyterian Church, E.K. served as Chair of the Board of Trustees, a Session Elder, and on the Finance, Personnel, and Mission Committees. He is also involved in efforts supporting the public schools, including being appointed to the Envisioning Committee for the Duval County Public School System and serving as President and board member of a charitable organization providing resources to public schools in Duval County. E.K. is also a member of the National Eagle Scout Association and serves as an Alumni-in-Admissions Representative for Wake Forest University.

E.K. served as Editor-in-Chief for the Florida Journal of International Law while attending the University of Florida College of Law. In 2022, he earned a graduate certificate in Business Communications from the extension school of Harvard University.
