Mr. King began his career in education in 1999 as a seventh-grade World Geography and Tennessee History teacher at Avery Trace Middle School. After seven years of classroom experience, he took on the role as assistant principal at Avery Trace Middle School. In June 2009, he was asked by Putnam County Superintendent to move into district leadership as the Attendance and Enrollment Supervisor where he oversaw all attendance and student information reporting for Putnam County schools. He also was the district Discipline Hearing Authority, district Public Information Officer, and School Safety Specialist. After eight years as Attendance and Enrollment Supervisor, Mr. King took on a new role in the district as Deputy Director of Schools. While in this role, he completed his Tennessee Prospective Superintendent Academy training in 2019 and became Director of Putnam County Schools in April 2020.
Mr. King was recently named 2021 Upper Cumberland Superintendent of the Year by the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents.
Putnam County has 19 schools, plus an adult high school and adult learning center which houses VITAL (virtual learning school). Current student enrollment is over 12,000 students with 1,650 employees. We are the third-largest employer in Putnam County.
