Kai Ni

Senior Consultant at PowerGEM

Kai Ni is a Senior Consultant at PowerGEM. His primary area of consulting is in power systems transmission planning, with extensive expertise in steady state analysis, dynamic analysis, renewable generator interconnections, synchronous machines, and power system markets. Prior to joining PowerGEM, Mr. Ni worked at the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) Power Systems Planning department for more than three years. While at NYISO, he has performed Under Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS) studies, Composite Load modelling, A-10 analysis, transmission planning assessment (TPL) and Area Transmission Review (ATR) studies, and Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) modelling. He was also the chairman of NPCC SS-38 Inter-area dynamic oscillations working group. Prior to NYISO, Mr. Ni was with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) for over seven years, where he performed analysis relevant to renewable energy interconnections, such as adding new wind and solar farms to the grid, grid code and grid compliance, transmission reinforcements, synchronous machines modelling and control, and GMD studies. Mr. Ni has a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Bachelors degree from the University of Waterloo. Mr. Ni is a registered Professional Engineer in NY.
