Abigail Cabunoc Mayes has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and organizations. Abigail currently works as an Open Source Program Manager at GitHub since 2022. Prior to that, they held the position of Director at the OpenJS Foundation, starting in August 2022. In 2022, they also worked as an Organizer for SustainOSS.

From 2020 to 2022, Abigail worked as an Open Source Consultant for UNICEF. Before that, they had an extensive tenure at Mozilla, where they held several positions. These include being a Program Manager from 2020 to 2022, a Practice Lead in Working Open from 2017 to 2020, a Developer Engagement Manager from 2016 to 2017, and a Lead Developer for the Mozilla Science Lab from 2014 to 2016. In this last role, they focused on making research open, collaborative, and accessible.

Prior to their time at Mozilla, Abigail worked as a Lead Developer for the WormBase/Stein Lab at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research from 2012 to 2014 and as a Developer for the same project from 2009 to 2012.

Their earlier work experience includes being a Bioinformatic Research Specialist for the Zacharewski Lab at Michigan State University from 2007 to 2008, a Skating Instructor at the University of Waterloo from 2006 to 2007, a Programmer Analyst (Co-op) at Citi from 2006 to 2007, and a PC Support Analyst (Co-op) at Citi from 2005 to 2005.

Abigail Cabunoc Mayes pursued their undergraduate education from 2004 to 2009 at the University of Waterloo. During this time, they completed a Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) degree in the fields of Computer Science and Bioinformatics.

In addition to their formal education, Mayes also acquired additional certifications. In January 2013, they completed the "Computing for Data Analysis" course offered by Coursera. Furthermore, in October 2020, they obtained the certification of being a speaker at the Open Source Summit Europe 2020, which was conducted by The Linux Foundation.
