Emma Thwaites has a diverse work experience spanning various roles in different organizations. Emma is currently a Board Member at OpenUK, where they collaborate with fellow board members to guide the strategy of the organization, which focuses on Open Technology. Prior to this, Emma held multiple roles at the Open Data Institute (ODI), including Director of Corporate Affairs and Director of Communication & Marketing. In these positions, they worked with clients and partners, led product innovation, public engagement, and advocacy, and built partnerships to promote the power of data. Emma also has experience as an Executive Chair and CEO at Allegory Communications, where they oversaw the strategic direction of the company. Emma served as Director of Communications (interim) at the Institute for Government, where they implemented a comprehensive communications strategy and secured media coverage. Additionally, Emma worked at the Cabinet Office and Central Office of Information, where they led strategic communications campaigns and provided consultancy services to various government bodies. Emma began their career as a Journalist at BBC Nations & Regions, taking on different roles in reporting, producing, news editing, and presenting. Overall, Emma Thwaites has extensive experience in communications, strategy, and advocacy in both the public and private sectors.

Emma Thwaites attended The University of Manchester from 1986 to 1990, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in English and History. In 1991 to 1992, they pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. Later, in 1998 to 2002, they enrolled in the MBA programme at the University of Bradford, focusing on Business.
