He has a degree in mechanical engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, a post-graduate degree in Management Development Program from Harvard Business School, and a master's degree from the University of Leicester, England.

He was a member of the board of directors of Trikem and the Paulínia petrochemical company and has served on the board of directors of several companies in the Odebrecht Group. Between 1997 and 2002 he was Chairman of North Sea Production Company Limited, a joint venture with the Danish Maersk Group, which operates the MacCulloch field in the North Sea for ConocoPhillips.

He is currently a Board Member at Ocyan, Odebrecht Engenharia e Construção, and Enseada Naval.
