Michael Smanski has worked in a variety of roles since 2008. Michael began their career as a Summer Internship - Biochemistry Group at Genencor in 2008. From 2011 to 2014, they were an HHMI Fellow of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Michael then worked as an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota from 2014 to 2018. In 2018, they became a Co-Founder at NovoClade and in 2020, they became a Technology Fellow at BioMADE.
Michael Smanski earned a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from UC San Diego in 2006. Michael then went on to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Microbiology, General from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which they completed in 2011.
