After that, John joined Progress Energy, where they worked their way up from an Associate System Operator to a System Operator III. In this role, they were responsible for daily dispatching of generation, transmission system reliability, and training of Associate System Operators. John also served as a System Operator Trainer, developing and administering training programs to comply with company and NERC standards.

Currently, John is working at North Carolina's Electric Cooperatives.
