Rod currently practices as a Specialist Physician in Public Health Medicine and has had a medical and research career spanning 40 years in the public, private and government sectors, most recently as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Health at the University of New England. He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, holds a PhD in injury epidemiology and is Editor-in-Chief of the British Medical Journal’s Injury Prevention publication.
Through a varied career in Australia and internationally, including with the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Rod has developed a broad perspective on community health and wellbeing and is a strong advocate for rural health. He has a range of experience in various philanthropic environments and a special interest in public health medicine, clinical epidemiology, systems science and injury prevention.
Rod brings to the foundation Board a unique perspective on the grant-making sector having been both a primary investigator on grant applications totalling more than $60 million, and a member of numerous competitive grant review panels in Australia and the United States.
