Senior Accountant – Accounts Receivable (AR) and Accounts Payable (AP).

Reporting to Assistant Controller – Finance

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, Finance, the Senior Accountant will manage full cycle accounting, financial reporting, and contractual compliance for existing and new Mitacs programs. As a key member of the Finance team, this role will participate in ensuring that all aspects of accounting with a key focus on accounts receivable & award payable, internal management reporting, and external statutory reporting are delivered to the highest standard.

The Senior Accountant will ensure strong controls are maintained in our existing processes and drive the team to improve upon the financial processes and procedures at Mitacs to create efficiencies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

TEAM LEADERSHIP:

  • Mentor your team members and colleagues to support growth and development
  • Monitor and manage the workload of direct reports; while managing multiple priorities
  • Review work of intermediate and senior team members and provide constructive feedback where required
  • Support the Assistant Controller – Finance in achieving departmental goals, objectives and internal service standards
  • Participate in the hiring and onboarding process for hires
  • Champion and support other business leads to increase knowledge and usefulness of the financial health of the organization

ACCOUNTING & FINANCIAL REPORTING

  • Assist in the review of selected weekly/monthly reconciliations and perform analysis on selected accounts and working papers as prepared by the team
  • Support the team in the identification and resolution of day-to-day issues involving systems and controls, accounting, approval and contracts
  • Ensure month-end timelines are met to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly internal financial reporting
  • Support the wider Finance team in the preparation of board reports and management reporting packages
  • Perform technical accounting analysis as required, providing insights and recommendations to the Assistant Controller and Director of Financial Services
  • Support the implementation of accounting policies and procedures to ensure accurate financial reporting
  • Support the research of accounting issues where necessary for compliance with generally accepted compliance principle.
  • Examine and analyze financial records/documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with established accounting standards, procedures and internal controls
  • Solve complex accounting problems through the application of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Support the management of funding contracts and financial reporting materials to meet funder and corporate needs
  • Support the analysis of financial information received to monitor financial results and changes to keep senior leadership abreast

PROCESS IMPROVEMENTS

  • Identify and assess areas for process improvements and efficient workflows while ensuring adequate internal controls for company oversight
  • Document new and updated processes

AUDIT

  • Prepare relevant working papers and schedules
  • Field questions and requests from auditors

STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS:

  • Act as a key contact for cross-functional communication with operational working groups
  • As a key contact for external audit fieldwork, review working papers and field questions/ requests as necessary
  • Respond to queries and exception requests from internal and external stakeholders
  • Represent the accounting team in providing technical accounting expertise in cross-functional meetings

OTHER:

  • Ensure compliance with Mitacs financial policies
  • CRA federal and provincial regulations knowledge as it pertains to sales tax
  • Be comfortable in taking on tasks beyond formal job responsibilities
  • Support the Assistant Controller – Finance on ad-hoc requests as needed

EXPERIENCE

  • CPA designation or equivalent recognized accounting designation in progress or completed
  • 2+ years of progressive financial reporting experience
  • 5+ years relevant experience working in full cycle accounting
  • Proven reporting and presentation skills inclusive of senior management
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Finance & Operations considered an asset

  • Knowledge of written and spoken English is required in this role as you will interact with colleagues, clients and stakeholders located across Canada

Hiring Range: $63,920 - $75,905

The salary range refers to the range of base salaries for a given position, encompassing the minimum and maximum amounts. The midpoint of the range is positioned approximately halfway between the minimum and maximum, indicating a fully qualified employee with comprehensive job knowledge and experience for the role.

Only in rare and exceptional circumstances, where a candidate has the experience, skills, and expertise that far exceed those required for the position, would we consider paying above the hiring range for this role.
