Becky Clay Christensen has a diverse background in affordable housing and community development. Becky Clay started their career in 1989 as a Program Manager at the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, where they administered programs totaling over $44 million annually. In 1998, they founded The Clay Christensen Group, a company specializing in strategic change management and public policy initiatives. Becky Clay also served as the Executive Director of the Virginia Microenterprise Network from 1998 to 2000. From 2008 to 2014, they worked as a Consultant Staff at Housing Virginia and the Virginia Housing Coalition. In 2009, they joined Bon Secours Health System as the Director of Community Health Services, and in 2015, they became the Executive Director of Community Health at Bon Secours Mercy Health.

Becky Clay Christensen obtained a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration from Ferrum College between 1978 and 1980. Becky Clay also attained an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree in Education and Business from Patrick & Henry Community College, with no specified start and end years.
