Dr Karp is a certified Addiction Psychiatrist since 1991. He served as the Chief Medical Officer for Rosewood Treatment Centers for 10 years and has vast experience in both addiction treatment and eating disorder treatment. During that time, he also worked as a psychiatric consultant at The Meadows in Wickenburg, Az. Prior to coming to Arizona to lead Rosewood he was Medical Director for the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and in that role over saw the clinical aspects of the Pennsylvania State Hospital system and community mental health system. Dr. Karp has always maintained a clinical practice when working in these administrative capacities, as he believes strongly that it is important to remain connected to his roots as a physician.
Dr. Karp graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, spent some time as a primary care physician before completing his psychiatric residency at Norristown State Hospital in Norristown Pa. He worked with the seriously mentally ill in a variety of settings during his time in Pennsylvania including inpatient, intensive outpatient and jail settings.
Dr Karp believes that the foundation of effective care is arriving at the correct diagnosis in order to provide the most effective treatment. This can be very complex in an individual who is using drugs and alcohol when they enter treatment. Consequently, he is careful not to rush into a psychiatric diagnosis until the effects of the substance use has had time to clear and the psychiatric symptoms define themselves more clearly.
