Maki has many years experience in the fields of technical and graphic design, marketing, and advertising. She received a doctorate in Analytical Chemistry and Geochemistry from Massey University (NZ). The practical aspects of her research work led Maki to achieve specializations in teaching, technical materials, and product interface design, where she favors multidisciplinary approaches and intuitive solutions.

Previously, Maki worked in Product Marketing for Advent Software through their acquisition of Tamale Software, where she had been Director of Marketing. At Advent, in addition to involvement with sales and marketing, she worked directly with development, services, and client-relations departments toward production of client- and prospect-facing design, new media, and materials — whether technical, educational, or pre-sales. She was previously VP of Project & Account Management at HCI, a promotion marketing firm.
