Birgitte Hygen has extensive experience in diplomatic and security roles within the Norwegian government. Currently serving as Avdelingsdirektør (Director) for the Section for the High North, Polar Affairs, and Marine Resources at Utenriksdepartementet since February 2020, Birgitte previously worked as USA-koordinator at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington D.C. from March 2015 to August 2019. Additionally, Birgitte held the position of Minister Counselor for political affairs at Utenriksdepartementet from August 2013 to March 2015 and served as Underdirektør in the Foreign Minister's Secretariat. Birgitte's educational background includes a Master of Philosophy in International Relations from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelor's degree in Communications from Goldsmiths, University of London, along with studies in Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo.
