Kelley Smith began their career in 2002 as a Wildland Firefighter at Mesa Verde National Park. Kelley then moved on to Clayton in 2007 as a Pricing Associate. In 2010, they joined Duff & Phelps as a Transfer Pricing Analyst. In 2011, they became an Associate at Economics Partners, LLC. In 2012, they were appointed Director of Finance at Aimco. Finally, in 2015, they founded Kokopelli Packraft.

Kelley Smith received their Bachelor of Science in Finance from Colorado State University between 2003 and 2007. Kelley then went on to receive their MS in Accounting from the University of Colorado Denver between 2009 and 2012.
