S Swaminathan is the Chief Executive and Founder of IRIS. An economist trained at Yale University, USA, he served as a Consultant to the World Bank in Washington DC before returning to India to first co-found a software company. He then went on to pursue a career in the media, serving in senior positions with India's leading financial daily, The Economic Times and later with the country's leading magazine, Business India. He founded IRIS in 2004. His passion for transparency and good governance drive his strong evangelization of XBRL as a standard, which also espouses quality data to make a better world.
Apart from his passion for information, Swami is also avidly interested in world politics, and issues around governance and policy. His interest is not merely armchair, he likes to actively engage and contribute wherever he can to shaping policy and influencing outcomes to get a more robust governance system.
He is a long distance runner, and while he rehabilitates from running injuries, he is invited to give humorous talks on running. Before he started IRIS, Swami was also closely involved in organizing the World Cup cricket tournaments.
Swami was a member of the Consultative Committee on XBRL, MCA, Govt. of India. He was also Chairman, IT sub-committee, CII, Western Region and Vice-Chairman, Indian Merchants Chamber, Navi Mumbai.
Swami is also the Honorary Chairman of the New Bombay chapter of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
