Dr. Angela Akol leads the work of the Ipas Africa Alliance. She has nearly two decades of experience and expertise in family planning, reproductive health, maternal and child health, and HIV/AIDS/STI prevention. She has directed and implemented health programs at national and community levels in Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Most recently, she was chief of party for a USAID $25-million funded project focused on integrated family planning, maternal and child health interventions in Zimbabwe.

Dr. Akol also served as Uganda country director for FHI 360 for eight years, with positions that included overall leadership for the Uganda program, covering HIV integration with reproductive health services, family planning, nutrition programs, education, and climate change. Prior to joining FHI 360, Dr. Akol was head of the Family Health Department for the National Population Council in Uganda, while simultaneously serving as the Uganda country coordinator for Partners in Population and Development, a global family planning advocacy agency.

She holds a medical degree, a master’s degree in population studies from Makerere University, and a Ph.D. in international health from the University of Bergen. She also is an honorary lecturer at Makerere University and has been actively involved in a long-term research project on the mental health status of children and adolescents.
