Christian Mahr's work experience begins in 1995, when they joined UNHCR as an Associate Protection Officer. Christian later became a Protection Officer and then Deputy Representative. In 2005, they joined the United Nations as a Legal Officer in the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), and in 2012, they became a Senior Legal Officer and Coordinator of the Border Security & Law Enforcement Group within CTED. In 2016, Mahr joined the International Criminal Court (ICC) as the Director of the Division of External Operations within the Registry, overseeing a team of over 220 staff members and the operations of field offices in situation countries.

Christian Mahr completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania from 1986 to 1990. Subsequently, they pursued a Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law between 1992 and 1995. In 2000 and 2001, Mahr took a Visiting Fellow position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they focused on the Center for International Studies. Prior to their university studies, Mahr attended St. Mary's International School from 1973 to 1985. Additionally, they spent a brief period at Bucknell University in 1985-1986, although no specific degree or field of study information was available for this period.
