Agrégé in geography in 1971, he began his career as a teacher at the Lycée Chaptal in Paris for a year (1971-1972), before spending two years as an assistant at the École normale supérieure in Nouakchott (Mauritania) (1972-1974). He joined the University of Paris IV in 1974, as an assistant, then a lecturer, then a lecturer. During these same years, he obtained his doctorate in geography there in 1975 and, in 1986, obtained a doctorate in letters at the same university. In 1988, he was appointed professor of geography at the University of Paris IV, of which he has been professor emeritus since 2014.
