Brian Thomas has extensive experience in education, training, and leadership within both charitable organizations and the military. Currently serving as Chair of the Independent Monitoring Boards since May 2016, Brian provides independent oversight at a local prison. Previously, Brian was Chief Executive of UK Flagship, a national charity dedicated to supporting disadvantaged youth through education and life skills, from January 2013 to December 2015. Brian also played a key role in the merger forming the Marine Society & Sea Cadets, leading as Director from January 1987 to January 2013 after initially developing The Marine Society’s operations. Early career experiences include lecturer positions in education, as well as various training and management roles in the Royal Navy, including responsibilities in training design and curriculum development. Brian holds multiple postgraduate degrees and an undergraduate degree, alongside formal training as a Royal Navy Officer.
