Steve is helping to develop commercial applications for technologies his lab has developed to regulate gene expression and modulate the epigenome to improve crop performance. He is a UCLA Professor in the Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology and serves as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator. His lab has been instrumental in defining the mechanism of action of several gene silencing pathways in plants. In recognition of this achievement and others, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Sciences. Steve earned his PhD at the University of Minnesota and postdoctoral studies at the California Institute of Technology.
