Travettae Sowells has a strong background in special education and compliance within the education sector. They began their career in 2005 as a Special Education Resource Teacher at B.K. Bruce Elementary in the Houston Independent School District. From there, they moved on to become a Special Education Reading Coordinator at the Houston Independent School District's Office of Special Education Services in 2009. They then transitioned to a role as a Special Education Program Specialist, providing instructional and compliance support to campuses, developing specialized training, and monitoring student data. In 2019, Travettae became an Accountability and Compliance Manager before taking on the position of OSES Senior Manager for Middle Schools in 2023. They served as the point of contact for middle school leaders regarding special education services, supervised staff, and ensured compliance with policies. Finally, currently, Travettae is working as a Unit Special Education Director for the Houston ISD, responsible for monitoring the special education program on assigned campuses to ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines.
Travettae Sowells received a Bachelor of Science degree in Merchandising from Northwestern State University in 1999. Later, they obtained a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration from Prairie View A&M University in 2008. In April 2009, they also obtained a Principal Certification from the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).
