Joel Smith has diverse work experience in the lighting industry. Joel started their career in 2000 at Puget Sound Energy, where they held various roles, including Residential Retail Lighting Program Manager. In this role, they led a successful program with a $15MM budget and a goal of distributing 4 MM LED and CFL lamps and luminaires. Joel also evaluated non-certified products for program eligibility. In 2014, Joel joined Lighting Science Group Corporation as a Retail Utility Rebate Manager, responsible for managing the national retail rebate program for LED lighting products. Joel later took on additional responsibilities as a Regional Sales Manager, overseeing commercial sales representation in the Northwest. In 2017, Joel joined Global Value Lighting as a Utility Retail Rebate Manager. Later that year, they also started working as a Firefighter at Benton County Fire District 1.

Joel Smith attended Jackson High School from 1996 to 1999. During this time, they did not receive a degree or specialize in any particular field of study. In terms of additional certifications, Joel obtained the IFSAC Firefighter 1 certification from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress in November 2017.
