Mark Cottrell has over 20 years of work experience in the field of geomechanics and engineering software development. From 1999 to 2008, they worked as an Engineer at Rockfield Software Ltd, where they specialized in the development and application of the ELFEN analysis code. During their time at Rockfield, they worked on various consultancy areas such as blast and impact, fracture and fragmentation, seismic integrity, and borehole stability. Mark also contributed to the development of constitutive modelling, DE contact interaction, parallel processing, explicit/implicit solution strategies, and coupled analysis types.
In 2008, Mark joined Golder as a Senior Geomechanics Engineer, where they continued to work on geomechanics projects. Mark later took on the role of Principal Geomechanics Engineer / Manager FracMan Technology Group Europe in 2014 and Principal Geomechanics Engineer / Technical Director FracMan in 2018.
In 2022, Mark joined WSP in the UK as a Technical Director.
Mark Cottrell holds a PhD in Numerical Analysis of Blast/Impact against Quasi Brittle Materials in Engineering from Swansea University, which they completed from 1999 to 2002. Prior to that, they obtained an MSc (Distinction) in Numerical Methods in Engineering from Swansea University between 1998 and 1999. Their undergraduate degree is a BEng (1st+Hons) in Civil Engineering from Swansea University, which they achieved from 1995 to 1998. Before attending university, Mark completed their A-Levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and German at Cirencester College from 1993 to 1995. Mark also completed their GCSEs at Cirencester Kingshill School from 1988 to 1993, which included subjects like Maths, English, Science, French, German, Humanities, Design, Physical Education, and Statistics. Additionally, Mark has obtained the certification of Approved Signatory from Golder Associates.
