James Điền Bùi is a Vietnamese-American executive who has dedicated their career to clean water and sanitation initiatives in Southeast Asia.
Bùi began their work in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in 2011 as the International Director of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for East Meets West, a program of Thrive Networks. In this role, they oversaw the expansion of the organization's WASH program in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos with 21 million dollars in funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and AusAID.
Bùi was instrumental in designing a public-private partnership (PPP) model to establish an output-based aid facility and promote private sector involvement in rural/peri-urban WASH initiatives. Under their leadership, 7,000 household clean water connections were made in these areas.
In 2012, Bùi joined Lotus Impact as their Director of Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene Programs. In this role, they were responsible for monitoring and managing the organizational operations for 100 staff members as well as providing internal strategy support for key programs including education, people with disabilities, irrigation/sustainable agriculture, and clean water and sanitation initiatives. James also developed MERL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting and Learning), an enhanced monitoring and evaluation system applied across organizational programs.
