Melton Shakir Mustafa serves as the President of MSM Arts, Inc., a not-for-profit organization focused on the preservation of jazz music since November 2005. In addition to this role, Melton has been an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at Florida Memorial University since August 1996. Melton's musical career includes performing as a trumpeter with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1984 to 1992, where contributions were made to the Basie songbook, and as a sideman in the Bobby Watson Horizon Quintet from 1984 to 2007. Melton holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Miami (1999-2000) and a Bachelor of Science in Music from Florida A&M University (1967-1969).
