Joan Barrett graduated from the University of Texas with a BA degree. Upon graduating, Joan went to work for Prudential in their Houston regional home office, working primarily in advanced marketing and sales support positions.

She was one of the first women to attain the CLU designation in 1975, followed by the ChFC designation in 1983. In 1980, Joan transferred to Prudential's corporate home office in New Jersey, where she attained the position of Vice President, Agency Development before leaving Prudential to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams.

When returning to Texas, she collaborated with Bill O'Quin on a variety of projects that culminated in the launch of Financial Services Online in 1995. She continues to develop and maintain most of the content in the Virtual Sales Assistant product on a part-time basis to date.
