Sonya Vargas

Sonya Vargas has a strong background in environmental science and biology with a focus on restoration and conservation. Sonya began their career as a Bahia Fellow at Ocean Discovery Institute in 2011 and went on to work as a Research Assistant at UC Santa Barbara and an Undergraduate Research Fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2012. In 2013, they served as a Conservation and Land Management Intern at the Bureau of Land Management and a Biological Sciences Intern at the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration. Sonya continued gaining experience in the field with roles such as an Environmental Stewardship Volunteer and Curriculum Assistant at Ocean Discovery Institute in 2014 and a Math Assistant at San Diego Unified School District later that year. Sonya then joined RECON Environmental, Inc. in 2015 as a Marketing Administrative Assistant/Biologist before transitioning to a role in Restoration Biology, which they held until 2019. In November 2019, they joined Environmental Science Associates as a Senior Biologist, where they are currently employed.

Sonya Vargas attended UC Santa Barbara from 2009 to 2013, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Zoology.
