Karl Sample is an experienced professional in energy systems and sustainability, currently serving as Delivery & Technical Lead at Energy Systems Catapult since January 2021. As part of the ESC Future Innovation Leaders Programme, Karl also deputizes for the Business Leader in the Modelling department. Previously, Karl worked as Senior Programme Manager for Energy & Sustainability with Sheffield City Region, where a region-wide Energy Strategy for South Yorkshire was developed while managing stakeholder relationships. Prior roles include Senior Scientific Officer at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, overseeing significant studies in low carbon heat technologies, and Technical Coordinator at Geowarmth, where renewable energy systems were designed for various applications. Education includes a Ph.D. in Energy Efficiency from Loughborough University and a Master’s in Renewable Energy from Newcastle University, complemented by a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Physics from The University of Sheffield.
