Yuan Yang began their professional career in 2011 as a Research Assistant at Zhejiang University of Technology, where they developed the synthesis process of methyl-modified polymers MPBI and designed and proposed a process to synthesis estrogen isoflavone. Yuan also optimized propylene rectification tower and conducted a two-effect rectification simulation to achieve energy saving using Aspen. In 2014, they took on the role of Beamline User at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Research Assistant (Soft Matter Study – Phase Behavior) at the University of Utah - Employment. In this role, they conducted multi-scale characterization of asphaltene and complex hydrocarbon systems to solve deposition, fouling, and emulsion problems. Yuan also identified phase behavior, self-assembly mechanisms, and fundamental molecular interactions of asphaltene in various liquid environments using Scattering, Diffraction, and SEM-EDS/EBSD/FIB. Additionally, they managed, processed, and analyzed scattering data (~30K datasets) using MATLAB and Python. In 2016, they became a Beamline User at Argonne National Laboratory, where they planned and managed 2 projects to study the structural properties of asphaltene for the first time using SAXS and USAXS in crude oils with the presence of polydisperse inorganic solids. In 2019, they took on the role of Project Intern at McKinsey & Company. Currently, they are a Scientific Developer at Emerald Cloud Lab.
Yuan Yang obtained a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Zhejiang University of Technology in 2013. Yuan then earned a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Utah in 2018. In 2016, they obtained a certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology for the NCNR Summer School on the Fundamentals of Neutron Scattering.
