Sam M. has extensive work experience in the energy industry. They started their career in 1994 as an HVDC Application Engineer at ALSTOM, where they designed reactive power controllers for HVDC schemes. They then joined National Grid in 1995, starting as a Power System Engineer in Planning and quickly moving into the Control Room. Sam M. worked at National Grid until 2005, holding various roles such as Balancing Services Manager and Data & Analysis Manager, where they led teams and made strategic financial decisions. From 2000 to 2005, they worked as an Energy Trader at Entergy, specializing in gas and electricity trading. In 2012, Sam M. returned to National Grid as a Process Improvement Manager, responsible for improving processes and managing change. In 2013, they joined SONI Ltd as an Operations Project Manager, contributing to the implementation of new market arrangements for Ireland and Northern Ireland. Most recently, they have been working at EirGrid since 2016, first as an Operations Manager in Real Time Grid Operations, and currently as Head of System Support & Analysis, leading teams in Dublin and Belfast and overseeing system balancing and auctions.
Sam M. attended Queen's University Belfast from 1991 to 1994, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Sam then pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at the University of Warwick - Warwick Business School from 2000 to 2003. Sam M. further expanded their knowledge in the field by attending Vlerick Business School from 2014 to 2015, where they completed the Future Power Grids Manager Programme, acquiring expertise in Future Power Grids Management.
