Raphaël Jean has a diverse work experience that spans several industries. Raphaël began their career as a Stagiaire en génie électrique at Cascades in 2008, followed by a role as a Stagiaire en conception logicielle at CAE in 2009. In 2010, they worked as a Stagiaire en génie électrique at Le Groupe S.M. International inc.
During their time at the Institut du véhicule innovant (formerly Centre National du Transport Avancé) from 2011 to 2012, Raphaël served as an Electronics and firmware designer. In this role, they planned, supervised, and designed the electronics of a Battery Management System (BMS) and developed and tested the firmware and GUI for the BMS. Raphaël also wrote the Electric Vehicle Charging Station installation guideline for Hydro-Quebec and conducted feasibility studies on electrifying different means of transportation.
From 2012 to 2013, Raphaël worked as an Embedded software designer at Embvue Inc., where they conducted R&D front-end development of a native Android application and studied the feasibility of running a software AFDX stack on PowerPC architecture.
In 2013, Raphaël joined Bombardier Transportation as an Embedded Software Engineer. In this role, they worked with project engineers to define release scope and plans, tracked software changes and progress, and developed IoT telemetry over LTE.
From 2017 to 2020, Raphaël served as a Project Manager at Vidéotron, responsible for the deployment of backbone aggregation routers and fiber/transport links in head ends. Raphaël also monitored the physical impacts of network architecture changes and developed tools and reports for financial planning and resource planning.
In 2020, Raphaël joined Menya Solutions as a Machine Learning Intern/Computer Vision specialist. During their tenure, they submitted a scientific paper to ICCV on unsupervised 9DoF pose estimation and designed and implemented a full-stack interactive building identification service.
Most recently, Raphaël has been working at E-SMART since 2021. Raphaël initially held the role of Machine Learning Lead, where they adapted, trained, and validated deep-learning models, defined vision and fusion pipeline architecture, and selected and validated embedded hardware platforms. Currently, they serve as the Director of Research Development (AI) at E-SMART, where they produce an AI enabled feature roadmap, contributes to IP strategy and patent writing, scopes and manages R&D projects, and establishes partnerships with academics and research centers.
Raphaël Jean began their education at Cégep de Sherbrooke from 2003 to 2006, where they studied Technologie des Systèmes Ordinés. Raphaël then pursued a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Université de Sherbrooke from 2006 to 2010. After completing their undergraduate studies, Raphaël Jean joined HEC Montréal, where they earned a Postgraduate diploma in Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services from 2012 to 2014.
Raphaël Jean further enhanced their knowledge and skills in the field of Machine Learning by obtaining a certification in Machine Learning from Coursera in September 2017. With a desire to delve deeper into this subject, they pursued a Master's degree in Machine Learning at Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute from 2018 to 2021.
