Sonny Zhan is an accomplished patent attorney with extensive experience in intellectual property law and a strong technical background in software and technology. Currently serving as the External Submissions Lead for Intellectual Property at IBM since 2019, Sonny Zhan focuses on preparing and prosecuting patent applications related to artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and software security, while also developing best practices for high-volume patent procurement. Previously, at Welch Allyn from 2009 to 2018, Sonny Zhan collaborated with research and business groups to secure patent protection and managed patent portfolios for innovations in software and medical devices. Early career roles included patent attorney at Merchant & Gould P.C. and various engineering positions at Boston Scientific. Sonny Zhan holds a JD, cum laude, in Intellectual Property Law from Mitchell Hamline School of Law and a Master's in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota Duluth.
