Jim Schaefer is an accomplished journalist with extensive experience in investigative reporting and newsroom management, currently serving as Executive Editor at the Detroit Free Press since 2000. Schaefer oversees critical coverage areas including autos, business, education, and investigations. Previous roles include Senior News Director for autos, business, and education, and Investigations Editor, where Schaefer managed a team of investigative reporters and provided expertise in the criminal justice system. Schaefer began the career at the Detroit Free Press as a copy editor, transitioning to various reporting roles, and has also served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Additional experience includes working as an Investigative Producer at WXYZ-TV and a Staff Writer at The Toledo Blade. Schaefer holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from The Ohio State University.
