In 2011, they joined the Moores Cancer Center as a Staff Scientist, where they worked in the Genomic Sciences Laboratory analyzing and managing data from genome-wide experiments. Pete was responsible for analyzing genomic Illumina bead chip arrays for methylation signatures and copy number aberrations in cancer samples, analyzing whole exome sequences looking for causal variants in various cancers, cardiac disease, and childhood metabolic disorders, analyzing whole genome sequences looking for novel mutations in patient samples with undiagnosed developmental disorders, and analyzing RNAseq data looking for novel/or embryo-specific isoforms in ovarian cancers in order to design diagnostic assays. In 2014, they became the Lead Bioinformatics Scientist at Biospyder Technologies, and in 2021, they were hired as a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at Design Therapeutics.

Pete Shepard completed their Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of California, Riverside between 1996 and 1998. Pete then went on to obtain a Master of Science in Computational Biology from New York University between 2003 and 2005. Lastly, they received a Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences from UC Irvine between 2006 and 2010.
