Chris Hartgerink is a seasoned professional in the field of software engineering and scholarly communication, currently serving as a Senior Software Engineer at DataDotOrg since January 2024. As the CEO and Founder of Liberate Science since September 2019, Chris has led initiatives focused on enhancing open science practices. Prior roles include Editor at the Journal of Open Source Software, Advisory Group Member at Stichting OA Switchboard, and Upstream Editor at FORCE11. Chris was also a Shuttleworth Fellow, concentrating on implementing democratic governance in scholarly communication organizations. Earlier experience includes positions as a Scientific Researcher at Charité and a PhD candidate at Tilburg University, coupled with an Open Science Fellowship at Mozilla and a Director of Scientific Integrity role at ScienceMatters. Chris holds a Research Master’s degree in Social Behavioral Sciences from Tilburg University.
