Banipal Shahbaz has a wide range of work experience in the technology industry. Banipal is currently the Head of Engineering - Products at Cribl since July 2021. Prior to that, they served as the Head of Data Platform and Visualization at Illumio from January 2020 to July 2021. Banipal also worked at Splunk, where they held the positions of Senior Director of Engineering, Security and Compliance Solutions from May 2018 to January 2020, and Director of Engineering, Security Applications from September 2014 to May 2018.

Before joining Splunk, Banipal was the Head of Engineering at WhiteHat Security for five years, from August 2009 to July 2014. In this role, they reported directly to the CEO and managed product development for all WhiteHat software across five teams while effectively managing a $6M engineering budget.

Earlier in their career, Banipal worked as an Engineering Lead at Raytheon Oakley Systems from May 2007 to September 2008. During this time, they were involved in the design and development of the CoreView collection architecture, focusing on file detection, protocol support, scalability, and improving performance.

Prior to that, Banipal worked at Symantec, where they had multiple roles. Banipal served as a Software Engineer in the Network and Gateway Security group from November 2005 to March 2007, responsible for researching and developing new protocol support modules. Banipal was also an Intrusion Detection Systems Engineer from August 2004 to November 2005, working on malware research, developing host integrity policies, and researching new methods for network protection.

Banipal started their career as a Graduate Student Researcher at the UC Davis Security Lab, where they worked from September 2002 to June 2004.

Banipal Shahbaz has a Master of Science (MS) degree in Computer Science with an emphasis in Cyber Security from the University of California, Davis. They also hold a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science, Magna Cum Laude, from UCLA. In addition to their degrees, Banipal Shahbaz has obtained a Level 1 certification as a Cribl Certified Observability Engineer (CCOE) User from Cribl in April 2023.
